5 questions for newly-crowned IndyCar champ Josef Newgarden:
This past Sunday, Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden finished eighth at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey, but the points he accumulated were enough to crown him NTT IndyCar Series champion for 2019. Hot on his heels in the points championship had been Alexander Rossi, from Andretti Autosport, and Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud. We caught up with Newgarden, the driver who many say is the future face of IndyCar, for some perspective on his season.
I’m not a fan, but it’s the system we run under. We know the deal going into the season. It’s been like that for a couple of years now. You have to prepare for it, know you have to go through the year with it. You try to build up as big a points gap as you can. But you know it’s always going to make it more difficult at the end. That’s the game. When you're leading the points, you don’t want it. But if you’re 60 points back, then you probably appreciate that there’s that opportunity.
