Photo by Tibrina Hobson/Getty Im/Getty ImagesThe Hip Hop Classic tour touches down Saturday, bringing Scarface, Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and DJ Jazzy Jeff. It’s a supernova of ‘80s and ‘90s beats and rhymes, featuring some of the era’s defining artists behind the mic and turntables. These are performers who helped bring the genre into the modern age, through a combination of subject matter, lyrical dexterity and sonic adventurousness.
: The Geto Boys jam “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” is a haunting tale of urban PTSD – with a backing track, fueled by a sample of Isaac Hayes’ “Hung Up on My Baby,” that you can dance to. There’s a ton to choose from in Scarface’s solo output, but “I Seen a Man Die” is a succinct, airtight story about trying to survive in a hard world.: You can take these two together or individually.
