This year's Garma Festival is shaping up to be significant, with the Uluru Statement from the Heart a key focus, and the push for a referendum to create a permanent Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

This year's gathering marks five years since 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoplein Central Australia, after months of consultations across Australia.

"With Garma, you always look forward to some big announcements, there's some very important people from around the country going," Mr Mayor said. Ms Burney says the government is prepared to face pushback on plans to proceed with a referendum from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Lead Convener of the Coalition of the Peaks, Pat Turner, said many Indigenous people were anxious to see proposed models for its role and function.

"The Australian public isn't just going to vote wholesale for something that they don't understand, and that's about how it's constituted and what its role and functions will be," she said.
