The $190 million city to Kangaroo Point pedestrian and cycle link is one of two left on the council’s immediate list of priorities from a vision for five new river crossings announced just three years ago.

Calling for interested parties to register interest in operating the Kangaroo Point bridge’s restaurant, the council also revealed it had pushed back the previous late-2023 fast tracked completion in line with theAsked about the cause of the delay, a council spokeswoman said: “Given the extreme weather events experienced in 2022 and the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge’s marine equipment being redeployed to assist with the city’s flood recovery, the project’s expected completion date is early 2024”.

The next Queensland local government elections will be held in late March 2024, and mark two decades since the LNP took power of the country’s largest council — which handed down aLabor council opposition leader Jared Cassidy said the green bridge plan had started with five river crossings but was now “an overpriced short bikeway extension at Breakfast Creek and a delayed pedestrian bridge at Kangaroo Point”.

Delivering his budget reply speech on Friday, Cassidy said the West End bridges were dropped “using the cover of the floods” despite the council “never intending to fund them anyway”. The LNP administration’s finance chair, Fiona Cunningham, responded that the flood had left the council with a $600 million bill three-times higher than the record 2011 event.

“To fund our recovery, we had to make difficult decisions to pause or cancel some significant projects,” Cunningham said. “But the Schrinner council has never and will never shy away from making the decisions needed to keep our budget sustainable.”
