Flash flood watch issued for San Diego County as potent New Year's Eve storm approaches [Breaking]
San Diego County will be under a flash flood watch from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday as the region copes with a potent New Year’s Eve storm that will drop up to an inch of rain at the coast, 1.5 inches across some inland valleys and foothills and 2.5 inches on Palomar Mountain.
Forecasters also have issued a high surf advisory, which will be in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday. Some San Diego County beaches could be hit with 6 to 8 foot waves, with sets to 9 feet.In the high Sierra Nevada, as much as 2 feet was expected to accumulate Saturday into early Sunday.
The rain was welcomed in drought-parched California, but much more precipitation is needed to make a significant difference. The past three years have been California’s driest on record. Humboldt County, where a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck on Dec. 20, also saw roadways begin to flood, according to the National Weather Service’s Eureka office. A bridge that was temporarily closed last week due to earthquake damage may be closed again if the Eel River, which it crosses, gets too high, officials said.
