Researchers examined Batemans Bay's two known cases of flesh-eating bacteria , reported in 2021 and 2023, and analyzed 27 possum feces samples. Possums are believed to be the primary carriers of the ulcer-causing bacteria, which has emerged in Batemans Bay after increasing in Victoria. Mosquitoes are thought to transmit the bacteria to humans. Researchers warn that the cases in Batemans Bay could signal a disease expansion in NSW similar to Victoria.

The bacteria found in Batemans Bay was different from the lineage prevalent in Victoria's most endemic areas. In one Batemans Bay case, a 94-year-old man had his ring finger amputated after a large skin lesion infected with the bacteria spread
