The Flinders Territory Medicine Program, which prioritises local and Indigenous students, has enrolled a record number of people in its course this year. There are hopes it will provide a long-term boost for the NT's medical workforce.
A Northern Territory medicine program which prioritises local and Indigenous students has recorded a record number of enrolments this year.The program is aiming to boost the NT medical workforce's historically low retention rate."Growing up as an Indigenous woman in the Northern Territory, I witnessed first-hand the plight of my mob and I was inspired by that to pursue a career in health," she said.
The university has also reported record growth in Indigenous students, with nine in this year's cohort."You're able to understand some of the language that they're speaking and all their mannerisms, you have that cultural awareness and cultural knowledge and I think that's really important," she said.
A study conducted by NT Primary Health Network last year found almost half of all GPs surveyed wanted to leave their current practice in the next one to five years.
