The Orlando Museum of Art parted ways with its CEO days after the FBI seized 25 paintings that were suspected to be falsely presented as works by Jean-Michel Basquiat
Basquiat, who was Andy Warhol’s protégé, found early success in the New York art scene, but his early death at 27 years old from a heroin overdose onlyin some circles as a genius. That legend made his art even more valuable—and led to more forgeries in recent years.
The owners said they had purchased the art from a man named Thaddeus Mumford, who they said bought the paintings around 1982 and then kept them in a storage locker, according to the search warrant.
