Hundreds of thousands of residents in Florida are bracing for the US state to be lashed by Hurricane Milton, after it strengthened into a Category 5 storm.
Florida is preparing to be battered by a second major weather event in a matter of weeks after Hurricane Milton strengthened into a Category 5 storm.
“Milton is expected to grow in size and remain an extremely dangerous hurricane when it approaches the west coast of Florida on Wednesday," the Hurricane Centre's forecast read. The National Hurricane Centre warned the storm was"extremely life-threatening" after Hurricane Milton intensified to the strongest level storm, reaching sustained winds of up to 285km/h. Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the storm turned from a Category 1 into a Category 5 storm in the space of just 18 hours. "President Biden was first briefed yesterday on Hurricane Milton’s potential impacts to the Florida Gulf Coast and the work FEMA is doing to preposition life-saving resources in advance of the storm", a statement from The White House read.
