Weekly flu cases have far surpassed the peaks of recent severe flu seasons.

Graph from the Pennsylvania Department of Health shows the surge in flu cases as of Dec. 3, with current cases, shown in red, compared to peaks of recent years.Pennsylvania flu cases made another giant leap last week, with the weekly case count by far the highest in at least eight years.

Since most people with the flu don’t get tested, the case counts reported by the health department don’t reflect the full extent of the flu.Still, the level of people hospitalized because of the flu remains relatively low at UPMC’s seven Harrisburg region hospitals. He noted that people hospitalized as a result of the flu typically were infected a few weeks ago, and now are suffering from conditions such as heart failure, emphysema or asthma that were worsened by the flu.

Goldman also said RSV cases involving children have begun to decline, but continue to put pressure on hospitals. As of Monday, about 10% of Pennsylvania hospitals were at full capacity for staffed beds, and 24% were at 90% or more of staffed bed capacity, according to tracking by the Hospital and Health System Association of Pennsylvania.
