The flu season has likely reached its peak in New South Wales, but people are warned the worst is yet to come from a new wave of COVID-19 transmission.

The BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants have quickly become the dominant strain of the virus, now comprising 83 per cent of cases.

"They are more able to evade immunity gained from previous infection and vaccination reinfection is more likely and possible just weeks after a prior infection," she said."The timing of the peak is likely to be sometime in late July or early August," the department said.
