A national strategy for flying vehicles, which could be in the skies within a few years, shows Australia is prepared for a “new era of aviation,” says Melbourne start-up Skyportz.outlining how long it will take to develop regulations that govern the widespread use of dronesDrones are expected to have “expansive access” to airspace up to 400 feet above ground level by 2026, and some flying vehicles may also be in the air by that date, according to CASA.
Skyportz chief executive Clem Newton-Brown, who wants to get regulatory approval for vertiports – sites earmarked for use by electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft – said clear rules would help Australia attract more foreign manufacturers of flying vehicles. There is currently only one local manufacturer, AMSL Aero.
New regulations are needed to allow flying vehicles to operate as well as permit drone deliveries throughout cities .with US manufacturer Electra.aero to buy up to 100 hybrid electric aircraft and is in talks with another US group interested in bringing aircraft to Australia. It has also teamed up with Australian universities to propose air taxi routes in Victoria, NSW, South Australia and Queensland as part of submissions for funding from the federal government’s $32.
