A former submarine commander has written a warts-and-all memoir documenting some of the near misses he had at the helm of a submarine and revealing the mental toll of a life underwater.
In an interview with Sunday Agenda, Commodore Scott spoke of the dangers and thrills of a life under the sea, his struggles with alcoholism and depression and of the"coffin dreams" he used to experience in periods on board a submarine that stretched for months.
"So what gets written in a review like that, what gets written in a White Paper is really important but in my view what matters most is what follows after that, the action that follows the review. The former commander has been careful to have his book: Running Deep, an Australian submarine Life cleared by the navy to ensure he did not give away any classified details about those mysteries of the sea, the submarine fleet.

We'd spent the last couple of months building the proficiency of the crew, testing the boat and getting ready for a long deployment across the Pacific.
“Whatever it is you make sure you're as prepared as you can be, your boat is prepared as can be and your people are as prepared as can be. Of the warts-and-all nature of his book, Commodore Scott said:"As I left the navy I was very conscious, for me it's a very normal life but for most Australians its exotic and an unknowable way of life.
