Melbourne University academic, Associate Professor Kim Sawyer says “one of the great mistakes” of the pandemic has been to focus on the number of cases, instead suggesting the focus be on a “case mortality rate”.
“The cases underestimate significantly the real number of cases.
“Antibody studies overseas, and indeed in Australia, show that the real number of cases is probably tenfold what we’re actually seeing. That changes the equation “We have to start focusing on what you’re focusing on, which is the case mortality rate… Essentially, if you get infected what are your chances of being in hospital, or of dying?”
