Ariarne Titmus has upstaged American swimming legend Katie Ledecky in emphatic fashion, winning a gold medal in the 400m freestyle on a successful day in the pool for Australia.

“I thanked [Ledecky]. I wouldn’t be here without her. She set this incredible standard. All credit to her for the swimmer she is. I’ve been trying to chase her. Really exciting now we have this battle going. It’s really fun to race. Titmus and Ledecky had a fierce rivalry before this tantalising duel, stemming from Titmus’s brilliant victory in the 400m freestyle over Ledecky at the 2019 World Championships.

Meanwhile, in the first event on Monday morning, McKeon claimed a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly after Canada’s Margaret MacNeil beat a strong field from lane seven. MacNeil, the 2019 world champion in the 100m butterfly, was the sixth-ranked qualifier for the race and, after turning in seventh place, stormed home to win her first Olympic gold medal.

The first male relay of the Games lived up to expectations, with Australia coming home fast to win a bronze medal thanks to a brilliant anchor swim from Rio champion Kyle Chalmers.
