Follow live: Texas Senate committee takes up transgender collegiate athletes bill
The Committee on State Affairs debates a bill that would require transgender collegiate athletes to compete according to their sex at birth.

Senate Bill 15 by Mayes Middleton, R-Galveston, would require transgender collegiate athletes to compete according to their sex at birth.The bill is one of Lt. Gov Dan Patrick’s priorities this session, and already has 17 of 31 senators signed on as coauthors., one of the few bills involving LGBTQ rights that he has publicly thrown his support behind.
If the bill passes committee, which has a Republican majority, it’s next stop will be debate by the full Senate. Both chambers must approve and the governor must sign any bill for it to become law. Texas lawmakers passed similar legislation restricting transgender athletic competition in high school sports last session.
