Global food delivery platform DoorDash has been slapped with an infringement of more than $2 million for breaching Australian spam rules on an extensive scale.

An investigation into the company by the Australian Communications and Media Authority found it had sent more than a whopping one million junk texts and emails across an eight-month period last year.

Between February and October 2022, DoorDash was found to have sent 566,000 emails to its clientele – after they had unsubscribed from receiving promotional messaging. It also sent a further 515,000 texts to forthcoming applicants who had requested information about the job or begun the onboarding process, without giving them any means to be removed from the mailing list in these messages.

“It is unacceptable that DoorDash’s prospective contractors were sent messages without an unsubscribe facility about a business opportunity that they may not have wished to pursue.”
