Food stamps: Direct payments worth average of $172 to be sent to Wisconsin recipients within seven days
The FoodShare program, the state's version of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, issues benefits from the 2nd through 15th of every month to help low-income residents pay for groceries.The day on which a beneficiary receives the benefits depends on the eighth digit of their Social Security number.
Those with zero as their eighth digit received their benefits on Aug. 2, those with 1 as their eighth digit got their payment on Aug. 3, people with 2 as their eighth digit received their benefits on Aug. 5, those with 3 as their eighth digit received their monthly payment on Aug. 6, and those with 4 as their eighth digit got their benefits on Aug. 8.
Beneficiaries who have yet to receive their benefits include those with eighth digits between 5 and 9, who will see their benefits between Aug. 9-15. Benefits are loaded on a Wisconsin QUEST card for recipients to purchase items in stores. To qualify for the program, applicants must be making less than a certain yearly income depending on household size. For example, a household of one may not be making more than $29,160 per year before taxes.Beneficiaries may use their FoodShare benefits on bread, cereal, fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, dairy,"snack foods," and nonalcoholic beverages, along with seeds and plants to grow food.
The state says that benefits may not be used for alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, medicine, live animals, hot foods,"food to be eaten in the store," along with other nonfood items. Further information on the program and eligibility can be found on the state's website.
