The devastating foot and mouth disease, which threatens to decimate Australia’s livestock industry, has been detected in goods coming into Australia from both Indonesia and China.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt revealed on Wednesday that viral fragments of foot and mouth disease had been detected in a beef product at an Australian airport, brought by a passenger from Indonesia. “These sanitation mats will be a physical reminder to passengers to do the right thing to limit any spread of FMD, and will be used in conjunction with our current measures, such as passenger declaration, 100 per cent profiling of all passengers entering from Indonesia, real-time risk assessments, questioning and shoe cleaning,” he said.

Mahar said the government must continue to ramp up biosecurity measures to detect the disease in line with the escalating risks.Mahar said the government should urgently implement any new technology measures that could help trace and detect the virus, and allocate extra funding to ensure every returning Bali passenger was screened by a biosecurity officer at airports.
