Footage has emerged showing the moment Japan’s longest serving prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot in the chest before being airlifted to hospital in the city of Nara.
The former prime minister was delivering a speech for a Liberal Democratic Party candidate ahead of Sunday’s upper house election.
A gunshot is then heard from off screen before a large plume of smoke appears and the former prime minister collapses on stage. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno confirmed to reporters that the shooting occurred at 11:30am on Friday and said the former prime minister’s condition was “currently unknown” despite reports from NHK which said Abe appeared to be in"cardiorespiratory arrest”.
The NHK has also quoted the fire department as saying Abe had no vital signs when airlifted to hospital. The 67-year-old is the longest-serving PM in Japan’s history, holding the top job from September 2006 to September 2007 and again from December 2012 until September 2020.
