Close to half of the AFL’s players, excepting those from the two Western Australian teams, have tested positive to COVID-19 over summer l JakeNiallTHEAGE agerealfooty AFL
Among the 14 clubs in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, the latest estimate of the number of players who had COVID-19 over the summer break - the majority over Christmas and New Year - is about half of those clubs’ playing lists, or an average of 20 or more per club, according to well-placed AFL competition sources.
While the NSW and Victorian teams have had about half their players get the virus - and industry sources say some clubs have had more than half their playing lists infected - it is noteworthy, too, that Gold Coast have also had more than 20 players with the virus over summer. The rapid spread of the virus through playing ranks in such a short period raises the issue of how the AFL will deal with a potential outbreak during the season - and the kind of situation that faced the AFLW last weekend, whenwas postponed because the teams could not muster enough players.
