The Allen-raised singer built a life — and found a record deal — in Brooklyn. Soon, she heads back home for a show that brings things full circle.
Enter TikTok, where Ponthier began posting clips of herself singing cover tunes and acting dramatically goofy, like a Gen Z version of Lucille Ball.
“I wouldn’t put you in country, I’d just put you in Ponthier-land, which is such a wonderful place to be,” he said.On June 2, she’ll headline her first D-FW concert as the top-billed act at the Dallas Pride Music Festival in Fair Park. We talked to Ponthier by video from her hotel room in Arizona, where she was performing that night. The interview has been edited for clarity.I grew up, I think as most children do, listening to what their parents listen to.
"I’ve been obsessed with the Dallas queer community and I’ve secretly been a part of it even before I fully came out," says Ponthier. "I used to go to [Oak Lawn nightclub] S4 to watch drag shows all the time. People that I grew up watching and loving are also playing the festival, like Lorelei K and Dezi 5 and Cure for Paranoia."
But then I moved there, and I didn’t have any connections, and I encountered so many problems — money problems, identity problems, not knowing what I should do, where I should go. And ironically enough, there were things I missed about home once I left it. In high school, I was smiling all the time, but I was struggling with mental health a lot. I felt like I was never heard, that I never had an outlet for someone to say “Your pain is valid.” I felt I knew I was queer, but at the same time, I didn’t know. I was in denial.
