There are many ways to win a major final, and Novak Djokovic now has explored them all. | Analysis by GregBaum

There are many ways to win a major final, and Djokovic now has explored them all. Last year, against Rafael Nadal, he played a near-flawless match. This one? "Turbulent," he said., Djokovic, Nadal and Roger Federer are the three greatest players of all, whose careers happen to be contemporaneous, which means they have stalled the effluxion of time until it seems to have forgotten how to tick.

As Djokovic noted without the least hit of patronisation when asked before the final if Thiem was foremost of the coming cohort: "He’s already here." Thiem is surer than ever that it will, and he doesn’t want it by historic default. "I really hope also that I win my maiden slam when they're still around," he said, "because it just counts more."

Either that or the troika will retire on their own terms. None give any sign that this is imminent, though Djokovic did say early on Monday morning that he would devote the next two years to the pursuit of more majors and to claim the record for most weeks at No.1, but would look no further than that. When Djokovic says he is going to devote himself, you’d better believe it.
