Houston rookie hits key homer to put Astros within one win of World Series title

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña hits a solo home run off Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard in the fourth inning during Game 5 of the World Series at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, in Philadelphia.PHILADELPHIA — With the World Series tied and a must-win game tied as well through three innings, Jeremy Peña morphed Houston’s tense desperation into elation.

Peña rounded third base and shrugged, a gesture he spontaneously debuted after he crushed the game-tying blast in New York that helped clinch the Astros’ pennant and cemented him as series MVP. In Philadelphia, his shrug was intentional. It punctuated a go-ahead blast that propelled the Astros to a 3-2 win in Thursday’s Game 5 of the World Series and accentuated Peña’s rapid ascension from playoff surprise to pillar.

The first rookie shortstop to win a Gold Glove one day later became the first rookie shortstop to hit a World Series home run in a game that put his team one win away from a championship. “Well, first, you just got to be grateful to be in the position that we're in,” Peña said. “We're in the World Series. That in itself is something special. So I just go out and enjoy it, have fun, play hard, play my game, and then just trust my preparation. There's a lot of preparation that's gone into this and we're just going to keep competing as a team and, yeah, keep going.
