From Here to the Great Unknown retells a deeply tragic family history burdened with addiction and trauma.
Some say addiction can stay in the gene line, sometimes passed down from one generation to the next. Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla, suffered a similar fate to her father, succumbing to the corrosive effects addiction reaped for him. Last year, she died aged 54 – 12 years older than her father at his death – after years of abusing painkillers. Addiction also took hold of her son, Benjamin Keough, who battled alcoholism before ending his life at 27.
Toward the end of his life, the King of Rock and Roll would consult spiritual and self-help books, including Khalil Gibran’sand a King James Bible, for answers. Key passages would be underlined with scribblings of “AMEN!” in the margins. Years later, when Keough visited Graceland with her mother and encountered these books, she saw how Elvis had a “fundamentally broken feeling … shared with my Mom”.His death in 1977 from a massive heart attack completely devastated Lisa Marie.
Opioids after another pregnancy would unravel the stability and control Lisa Marie had otherwise achieved in “her happy years” . During particularly difficult withdrawal episodes, she would drive from Memphis to Graceland to sleep in her father’s bed, quietly weeping while tours took place downstairs.Credit:Tragedy and trauma stalks those living in the King’s shadow, including grandson Benjamin, who was beleaguered by alcohol dependency and took his own life in 2020.
