Got COVID again? So do a lot of other San Diegans
San Diego County detected 3,122 coronavirus reinfections in June, nearly twice the number spotted in May, and it is quite clear that those numbers are gross underestimates.
The reinfection boom, which has also been observed in other places such as New York, though there are no nationwide numbers available, is the latest in what has turned out to be an odd start to this, the third year of the global coronavirus pandemic. “There is widespread infection in the community, and there are very little personal precautions,” said Dr. David “Davey” Smith, chief of infectious disease research at UC San Diego. “The good news is that most infections are not life threatening, but people are getting infected over and over.”
But Smith said that those doing vital law enforcement jobs are not like the rest us. Nobody gets to request a vaccinated officer when they call 911. Crotty, whose work on an HIV vaccine has been widely recognized, said we are all experiencing the wondrous benefits of the human immune response which — researchers have learned over the past decade — provides much broader protection than most people think.
Booster shots, then, not only help to diversify a person’s immune response but also to cook up a fresh layer of protection.the body’s first line of defense that triggers other virus-fighting components to get ready to fight. The net effect is people getting infected without producing symptoms, allowing the virus to replicate over and over again in the body before symptoms appear.
