A total of 599 will be built, and all will be left-hand drive. That, and the price tag, hasn’t deterred Australian buyers from pre-ordering.

Ferrari’s latest model is named after the 24 Hours of Daytona, an American race where the red Italian sports cars pulled off a famous 1-2-3 formation finish in 1967.

Nostalgia is a thing: the Daytona SP3 is reminiscent of a “sports prototype” racing car of the type that competed at Le Mans, Daytona and Spa in the 1960s. The engine is a further development of the V12 in the current 812 Competizione coupe, but there it is placed ahead of the driver, here it is mid-rear mounted. The chassis/body is built around a modified LaFerrari carbon-fibre tub, but there is no sense of it being a parts-bin car; everything is beautifully finished to the same standard as the regular production cars. The bespoke tyres are the largest ever used on a Ferrari road car, with the rears 345 mm wide.

How much real world commuting is done in cars like this is hard to say, though once you are in the swing of it and familiar with the width and unusual proportions , it’s surprisingly easy to drive. Huge fun, too.
