Opinion: For the high number of registered voters who don't bother to show up for elections when there isn't a presidential contest on the ballot, please rethink the importance and value of your vote.
Election officials here and across the state and country are under attack by Republican election deniers still spreading the lie that former President Donald Trump defeated President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Do not be surprised if some poll sites on Election Day are disrupted by right-wing extremists interfering with volunteer poll workers.Early voting starts Monday, Oct. 24, and continues through Friday, Nov. 4. Voting hours vary during that period.
Sadly, most eligible voters do not bother to show up for elections in nonpresidential election years. That represents a tragic lack of appreciation for the right to vote in the United States, which has never been more important. That civics lessons should have been obvious to all after Trump’s failed effort to undermine the vote, and by extension, democracy, in 2020 —Free and fair elections is the underlying issue in this election.
Democrats are trying to break the 24-year lock on all statewide offices held by Republicans. Credible candidates are challenging incumbents for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general, among other state races. Abortion, immigration, gun control, access to affordable health care and housing and the economy are all issues driving high interest this year.I just hope the energy I see being spent on social media translates into actual turnout.
