And, he suggested that Australians in the country should not assume the government would put on evacuation flights if the security situation in Lebanon deteriorated. Mr Maclachlan said the 2006 evacuation was "seared" into the mind of consular officials, but that the federal government would have fewer options to get Australians than they did back then.
"The options this government would have available to assist Australians are more limited than they were in 2006, and the number of Australians in Lebanon is larger," she said.Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles suggested that the aircraft could be used to support Australians who might need assistance in the region, although he has offered no guarantees on that front.
The ability for that aid to reach Gaza has been widely reported to be difficult, four convoys of 62 trucks filled with aid supplies had been allowed in through the Rafah Crossing since fighting began. "It's been proving very difficult. There are obviously many parties to this. Egypt and Israel and others," she said.
