Australians should prepare to pay higher international airfares, as airlines struggling with rising fuel costs cut their capacity on routes here | pwhatch
Travellers have been warned that international airfares will rise as airlines cut back on flights to and from Australia.Airline flight schedules used by airlines and airports show the total number of seats being flown out of Australia are set to fall by around 1 per cent from late October to late March.
Mr Webber said Chinese carriers had added too many services to Australia to quickly and were struggling to fill their planes, while the state-backed Middle Eastern carriers were all coming under financial pressure.“They’re being more rational now, which is really good news for Qantas and Virgin," he said.
Routes into Asia are down 1 per cent over the summer period, with Cathay Pacific cancelling its Cairns-Hong Kong service, and Air China and China Eastern also pulling back.
