Amid declining Christianity and growing atheism, there's a small but significant group of minority religions thriving in Australia.
"When I first came to Australia in 1998, there were very few [Hindu] temples," he says.
According to the ABS, more than 2.5 million people — roughly 10 per cent of the population in 2021 — now report an affiliation with a minority religion.Christianity, meanwhile, has dropped by more than 26 per cent in the same period,Islam is the largest minority religion, representing 3.2 per cent of the total population, followed by Hinduism and Buddhism .
Within a 750-metre stretch are three Buddhist temples, each belonging to a different Asian community: Chinese, Cambodian and Vietnamese.The head monk at the Vietnamese temple, Thich Thien Tam, came to Australia as a refugee. "Since the abolishment of the White Australia policy, and because of globalisation, large numbers of migrants continue to come from Asia, [so we're seeing] quite a dramatic rise of the number of Buddhists in Australia again."Tu My Nguyen was a Buddhist nun for 16 years, only recently deciding to become a lay person again.
