As Apple prepares for its March event, the tech world is expecting an updated MacBook Pro. But something better is planned for later in the year.

Are you looking for power? Thanks to the improvements in Apple Silicon, the high-end Macs are able to offer more power with more efficient battery usage than in previous years. Those that need that amount of power on the move will have the new M1 Mac and M1 Pro MacBook Pro laptops.

One of the strengths of the M1 chipset was just how much it offered at the baseline - the entry-level M1 MacBook Air was more than competent for day to day use and light media creation work. The MacBook Air is more than “good enough” for the majority of users. Take that into consideration and for most people, the MacBook Air will be the computer that just works for some time. Bump up the MacBook Air to the M2 silicon later this year, and you have the best all-rounder for years to come.

Finally you have to think about all of the lessons Apple will have learned since the launch of the first Apple Silicon vased Macs. For all of the design and testing behind closed doors, once the M1 hardware reached the public the volume of feedback and data would be huge. All of that will be used to improve the M2.

The same will be true of the software. MacOS has picked up a number of updates since the first ARM-supporting version was released. A full refresh to take account of all the public lessons will likely be rolled into the MacOS update previewed in June’s WWDC ahead of a public release later this year… alongside the new hardware in general and that new MacBook Air in particular.
