Should you have children, or not? The quiet agony of motherhood ambivalence
"It's very common these days to hear, 'I love my children, but I regret motherhood'," says Baldwin.
"I can't imagine having any more stress right now, and having to think about someone else who needs constant attention," says Winderbaum, who thinks about children "as a logical decision, more than a heart decision". Instead, Davidman asks her clients to write down every fear, stress-inducing headline, side-eyed comment and judgmental question that has twisted them into a knot of ambivalence — then put it in an envelope and set it aside.
For many others, she says, ambivalence is born out of unresolved trauma they might not be aware is there.
