Residents are calling for an explanation as to why a major park remains closed six months after the Maribyrnong River burst its banks, when other play sites reopened long ago.
Children are still unable to play at Footscray Park’s playground, six months on from the October floods.
“The other day it started raining really heavy and my son said, ‘oh no, the playground will go underwater again’,” the boys’ mother Alycia Mustafa said. Clumps of flood debris can still be seen in parts of the site and some sections of the permanent fencing are still down. A temporary fence encircles the five-year-old playground to prevent entry, but children have been seen playing inside and gaps between barriers have been forced open.
“I’m just wanting more information and transparency,” Joyce said. “There was a lot of money spent on that playground, it’s such a great space and, as a resident, I’m interested to know what the plan is.”Penny StephensFriends of Footscray Park member Gemma Cafarella said six months to deal with the impact of flooding seemed “an inordinate period of time”.
