White Sox’ La Russa hopes to be in Oakland for Stewart ceremony, but return is TBD
OAKLAND – It remained unclear Wednesday whether Tony La Russa will be able to travel to Oakland this week to rejoin the Chicago White Sox for their series with the A’s at the Coliseum.
La Russa, 77, is in regular contact with the team’s coaches, including interim manager Miguel Cairo, the spokesman said, and is in good spirits, from all indications. The White Sox spokesman said La Russa still hopes to be in Oakland on Sunday when the A’s retire Dave Stewart’s No. 34 in a pregame ceremony, but that is out of his control. Stewart, the 1989 World Series MVP, pitched for La Russa in each of his eight years in Oakland when he went 257-245 with a 4.11 ERA.The White Sox had a record of 5-2 without La Russa and entered Wednesday in third place in the American League West at 68-68.
