Longtime diplomat David M. Satterfield “will lead U.S. diplomacy to urgently address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” the State Department said.

David Satterfield, left, in May 2019, when he was U.S. deputy assistant secretary, meeting with then-Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri. Former ambassador David M. Satterfield has been appointed as special envoy for Middle East humanitarian issues, a role in which he will focus on “ensuring lifesaving assistance can reach vulnerable people throughout the Middle East,” the State Department announced Sunday.

“Civilians should not have to suffer for Hamas’s atrocities,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in announcing Satterfield’s appointment during a visit to Cairo. “We’re determined to do everything we can to address the needs of people in Gaza.”The appointment comes as Israel prepares to launch an invasion into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
