Australian Test cricketer, off-spinner Bruce Yardley, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 71.

The cricket landscape in which Bruce Yardley was for a while an exuberantly prominent feature is so unrecognisable now it would attract a DFAT notice forbidding visitors.

Yardley was a fast bowler himself, with a fast bowler’s physique, but was unable to impose himself among the phalanx of West Australian quicks, and so for 10 years made only isolated appearances in the state team until he turned to off-spin.It was a distinctive form, delivered at the end of a fast bowler’s long, bouncy, angled run-up and from middle rather than index finger. But it proved spectacularly successful.

Bowling, batting or fielding, there was a zest and jauntiness to all of Yardley’s cricket that fitted the manic times and endeared him to fans. It was infectious. Against the West Indies at the SCG in 1981, John Dyson took one of the great outfield acrobatic catches. The beneficiary was Yardley. In his first Test summer, a crushing one for WSC-blighted Australia against England, Yardley one day opened the bowling with leg-spinner Jim Higgs and an old ball.
