Jim Brandenburg coached the Aztecs from 1987 to 1992 after leaving Wyoming; Nathan Mensah awaits NBA fate; and the Swish Pro-Am League returns with a new venue and format
Former San Diego State men’s basketball coach Jim Brandenburg died last weekend. He was 87.
In nine years at Wyoming, Brandenburg averaged just under 20 wins per season and reached the NCAA Tournament three times, including a Sweet 16 appearance with star guard Fennis Dembo in 1987. His departure to SDSU a few weeks later was sudden and unexpected. At Wyoming, his early success was a catalyst to raise money for the 15,000-seat Arena-Auditorium — the largest indoor seating venue in the state — that replaced 5,000-seat War Memorial Fieldhouse. Wyoming still plays in the A-A, which has been since downsized to 11,612 for basketball.
“He had to have unique guys who would play for him, and he didn’t have those guys out there,” McKinney said of Brandenburg’s time at SDSU. “They just didn’t fit his style or his way, so it didn’t work out for him. He was perfectly built for Wyoming and what Wyoming could attract athlete-wise, mentality-wise and toughness-wise.”
