NRL: Ben Hunt is adamant the Maroons aren't focusing their attention on the inclusion of Latrell Mitchell for Origin Game II.

NSW's Trent Hodkinson scores the winning try during Game 2 of the 2014 State of Origin series at ANZ Stadium .Picture Gregg Porteous Former Blues halfback Trent Hodkinson has lifted the lid on his iconic series sealing try in Game II of the 2014 State of Origin series.

“ wasn’t on my radar, I had just come back from injuries a couple of years before so I was focused on repaying the Bulldogs. At that point, Hodkinson could’ve been forgiven for thinking he’d need to wait a little longer for his maiden Origin call up. However, that wait wouldn’t be too long.“I never answered numbers I didn’t know but made sure I answered that night and I’m lucky I did because Loz just said ‘mate, it’s Laurie Daley. Are you ready?’ and I said ‘absolutely.’”

“It just got us out of sydney and really brought us together as a team and built that mateship and camaraderie and that brotherhood.“On paper we were nowhere near as good a side as they were. They had future immortals stacked in that side it was more the fact that we wanted it more. Especially the boys that had been there for so long, they’d endured so much pain fpr eight years.

“Our defence won that game for us. “Every player in that team just did whatever they could and that’s what gave us victory in the end. That win set the Blues up for Game II at home in front of a packed out Accor Stadium with the chance to win their first series since 2005. I was on the short side. We had all our big indicators on the long side - Josh Reynolds, Haynesy, Birdie, Lewis,” he explained.

Interestingly, Hodkinson revealed former Blues coach Brad Fittler, who won three series in the top job, was the Blues’ blue shirt trainer during the 2014 series.“Funnily enough I got back to that conversion and I remember Freddy was our trainer, he was our blue shirt and he walked up to me and said ‘take your time.’”

As they say, the rest is history. Hodkinson became the first halfback since Andrew Johns to win an Origin series for the Blues, and did so alongside his great mate and club teammate Reynolds.
