A former bowls and social club will be demolished to make way for new housing
. The closed Wilford Bowls and Social Club off Main Road in Wilford will be torn down to make space for five new detached homes, after plans were granted permission on September 28.
The bowls club ceased operating in 2018, prior to which it was listed as an asset of community but no community group came forward to acquire the site after its closure. Conservationists had hoped the building, which may have been part of a large Victorian house, would be converted instead of torn down.In a planning document, Nottingham Civic Society objected to the plans, stating: "More consideration should have been given to retaining and renovating the former clubhouse.
The site had been the subject of lengthy negotiation regarding differing development proposals. The city council said the five "moderate to large sized detached properties [are] much more in-keeping with the general grain of development" as opposed to the abandoned retirement scheme. "Whilst it is accepted that part of the building is of some historic interest, it has been unsympathetically treated and added to over time, which is considered to significantly dilute its merit as a heritage asset. Indeed, a scheme which sought to retain and repurpose the building would, it is considered, sit awkwardly with the remainder of the site.
