The then 15-year-old had been working at a Canberra cafe when she was hospitalised with a salmonella infection.
A former kitchen hand has been awarded more than $65,000 after contracting salmonella as a 15-year-old while working at a Canberra cafe.
It was during this period, between January 31 and February 10, 2017 that a 15-year-old casual staff member presented to hospital with symptoms. One witness told the court she had to have "a large portion of her stomach removed" as a result of her infection.Ms Gibson's case in the ACT Supreme Court claimed the cafe was negligent in its duty of care to her, and that the infection caused her long-term health impacts she was entitled to compensation for.
In defence of the case, the cafe argued Ms Gibson had not proven she contracted salmonella poisoning at work, that she had failed to take proper precautions. Ms Gibson claimed damages of over $400,000, telling the court the illness made her "critically unwell" for months, with symptoms of vomiting, weight loss, irritable bowel syndrome and cognitive issues.
