The lawyer for former Catholic bishop Christopher Saunders says he intends to plead not guilty to five charges relating to the alleged assault of a 24-year-old man.

The former Bishop of Broome Christopher Saunders has faced the Broome Magistrates Court on five new charges of unlawful and indecent assault.

Earlier this month, WA Police Child Abuse Squad detectives charged Mr Saunders with the five offences, alleging he had assaulted a 24-year-old man in 2016. The 74-year-old is now facing a total of 33 charges, including 21 charges of unlawful and indecent assault, two counts of sexual penetration without consent and three counts of indecent dealing with a child.ABC Kimberley: Erin ParkeIn his last court appearance in September, Mr Saunders pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of unlawful and indecent assault, two counts of sexual penetration without consent and three counts of a person in authority indecently dealing with a child.
