A former Chinese spy is set to give evidence in a major Canadian inquiry into foreign interference following his appearance on Four Corners, where he revealed China's illegal operations on foreign soil, including the targeting of a prominent dissident who died in Canada in 2022.
The former spy known as Eric is set to testify at a Canadian inquiry into foreign interference, which has singled out China as "the main perpetrator" of such activities against Canada.Friends of Mr Hua are urging the Canadian government to reopen the investigation into his death.
"China has been assessed by Canadian authorities as the most active foreign state actor engaged in interference directed at government officials, political organisations, candidates for political office and diaspora communities," an initial report released in May by the commission states. Eric says he has shared part of those files, including encrypted messages and intelligence reports, with the Canadian commission.
While he was in hiding in Thailand, Chinese intelligence designated Mr Hua as a "high-profile target", offering a reward of 100,000 RMB for assistance in his repatriation, according to the former agent Eric. The former agent created an online anti-CCP persona to get close to Mr Hua, gradually gaining his trust through discussions of forming an armed resistance group against Beijing. He initially settled in Halifax in eastern Canada and applied for a humanitarian protection visa.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police told the ABC that a thorough investigation had been completed and that Mr Hua had drowned. His case was not treated as suspicious. "It provides insight into his personality, vulnerabilities, financial operations, and communications, essentially building a comprehensive profile.""From the Chinese perspective, they are identifying and neutralising a threat to the state. For Canada, we have a sovereignty issue here."ABC Investigations has also uncovered allegations that Mr Hua was involved in an assassination attempt on Chinese President Xi Jinping a year before the dissident's death.
