Paul Vallas, former CEO of CPS and a frequent critic of Mayor Lori Lightfoot, announced he will run for mayor.
Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas announced Wednesday he will run for mayor, saying Chicago faces a “crisis of leadership” under Mayor Lori Lightfoot.Vallas finished ninth out of 14 candidates in the 2019 race for mayor, garnering 5.4% of the vote during the contest’s first round.
“Chicago is ready for a leader to guide them with more than poll-tested rhetoric and empty promises; one with specific plans, and the know-how to execute those plans,” Vallas said in a statement.Vallas, 68, is the fourth candidate to join the 2023 race for Chicago mayor and the second candidate to try again after a failed bid in 2019. Like Vallas, businessman and philanthropist Willie Wilson ran in 2019, endorsed Lightfoot and regretted it. Also in the race are Ald. Raymond Lopez and state Rep.
When contacted by WTTW News, Lightfoot's political organization shared a statement from Ald. Scott Waguespack , the chair of the City Council's Finance Committee.
