A village that once housed 3,500 mine workers could become the first mainland Australian site to house coronavirus evacuees from China's Hubei province.

A former mining workers village in Darwin is being assessed as the first mainland Australian site to house coronavirus evacuees from China's Hubei province.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner confirmed that he had received a call from Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and that Australian Government officials would today asses the site for suitability. The former Inpex workers village housed 3,500 workers at the height of construction of its $55 billion gas plant on Darwin Harbour.Mr Gunner said yesterday he was open to using the village as a quarantine centre.

He said he had made an offer of assistance to Prime Minister Scott Morrison over the weekend and discussed the facilities available in the Northern Territory."Our priority in any of those conversations will be how do we make sure Territorians remain safe and healthy."More to come.
