The move reportedly frees up $26.17 million in cap space for the Commanders.
Wentz played in eight games, starting seven, last season and posted a 2-5 record. He threw for 1,755 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Washington is expected to move forward with second-year man Sam Howell as its starting quarterback next season. Wentz’s release combined with his poor play down the stretch with the Colts and his struggles last season leave the outlook for his future muddled at best.It has been a surprising downturn for a player taken second overall in 2016 by Philadelphia. Wentz went 11-2 as the team’s starting quarterback in 2017 and threw for 3,296 yards with 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions but he has never been able to match those numbers again.
