The Albanese government has released a report into the former government’s decision to publicise the arrival of an asylum seeker boat on the day of the federal election in May.
Reports show the Morrison government pressured border force officers, Australian Defence personnel and the Home Affairs department to break with democratic protocols.
Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil says they prioritised political interest over national interest and should apologise to the Australian public. “The former government had a duty to protect Australians; instead, their actions on election day fundamentally undermined our democracy,” she said at a media conference on Saturday afternoon.
“They undermined the integrity of an operation that is difficult, that is dangerous and that was part way through implementation.”
