“This is a despicable and barbaric act that took place in the midst of an election, the very foundation of democracy, and cannot be forgiven. I condemn it in the harshest possible term.” Television footage showed images of Mr Abe collapsed on the street. Images on social media also showed suited security officers tackling a man believed to be the shooter to the ground. Two gunshots were heard at the scene of the attack.

“Abe was the most consequential Japanese leader of his generation, helping to transform his country’s foreign policy and remove many of the postwar shackles which have set limits on use of the country’s military,” Lowy Institute senior fellow Richard McGregror said.
