Will Schweitzer says he will remain at Notre Dame in a supporting role, continue to pursue a business degree.
Former Los Gatos High star Will Schweitzer announced on Wednesday that he is retiring as an active player on the Notre Dame football team as a result of a congenital heart condition called Patent Foramen Ovale .
Schweitzer, a linebacker, suffered what he described in a social-media post as “a non-football related medical event” in September caused by the heart issue.in a Twitter post . “However, after careful consideration with my family, doctors and coaches, we have decided it is best for me to step down from an active player role.
“I will remain a member of the Notre Dame football family in a supporting role, and continue to pursue my degree from the Mendoza College of Business.”“Being part of one of the greatest sports teams in the world is a dream come true,” he added. “The brotherhood that I have with my teammates is something that I will hold dear forever.”
Schweitzer appeared in three games as a freshman in 2021, against Navy, Georgia Tech and Stanford. He was credited with a tackle against Georgia Tech, Notre Dame’s home finale that season.
