Hawkins is back playing football after figuring his playing days were over.
“It was already stuck in my head that I’m pretty much done with football after the last go around,” said Hawkins, who was also a very good baseball player in high school. “I was comfortable and content where I was, giving back to those young guys and helping them learn.”
In May 2018, he suffered suffered a torn quad muscle and was ruled out for the season. In August 2019, the Steelers traded him to Tampa Bay, where he played one game for the Buccaneers. In 2020, he landed on the Houston Texans practice squad before coming back to the Steelers after an injury along the offensive line. He would go on to play 13 regular season games and one playoff game for Pittsburgh that year.
But he couldn’t shake the feeling of wanting to get back into the game, so now, the 6-foot-6, 305 offensive lineman is in Saskatoon attending Riders training camp. He’s been primarily working at left tackle with the starting offensive group.And while Hawkins has done a good job impressing the coaches during team practices, he also puts in extra individual work after practice, knowing that’s what it takes to be a professional athlete.
